This standard has been introduced to ensure the safety of the final consumer, since electrical appliances not intended for normal household use, however, which nevertheless might be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry, and on farms, are covered under this standard.

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after draft finalization by the Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances Sectional Committee, which had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.
